I remember the first time I wrapped my self in the Organic Cotton Jersey fabric we use for our Eco Sarongs.
I felt tingles all over my body.
I had always wondered if there really was any difference between organic cotton and standard cotton. I thought ... maybe its just a marketing gimmick to validate companies charging double. So I bought a few metres to test out the fabric my self and slept with it every night! It felt like I was wrapped in Sun Flower petals. Seriously.
I wondered.... how can I share this? Make dresses or bed linen. Deep down I really wanted to make sarongs with it. But my mind crept in and said "Amy thats a crappy idea! Sarongs cant be made from Jersey fabric! Its never been done!" So it was game on. Me Vs My Mind.
The hot goss on the fashion scene in Bali at the time was this Natural Dye House that had just opened. When I heard about it I got the tingles all over again.
Double Tingles. Looks like my instinct was in a battle with my mind.
So the next day we went on a little mission to find it. It was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! To say the least.
I was like a farm kid in a city lollie shop for the first time.
They showed us the fresh green leaves be mulched then the dye extracted. I was naive in thinking that seeing the leaves are green the dye colour will also be green!
We watched the green leaves from the indigo tree become blue dye. Almond leaves become grey dye. Mango leaves became yellow dye.
I also learnt the techniques available and drew on my inspiration to spend the next month designing samples to be made. I wanted each design to pay tribute to my natural oasis the beach.
I'll create a post for each style and exactly how it was made with leaves, spounges & tree climbing.
May the sun be shining in your world,
